Archive for August, 2010

24 August 2010

Before my hard drive crashes and I lose my mountain of music, I thought I would publish my earliest demos. These tracks are all from around 2000 I think. I used  a Fostex 4-track to record everything, my guitar, my brother’s bass, pots & pans and even an egg timer.

Recently I started submitting entries for the Stones Throw Beat Battle, taking 2/3 days to sample a predetermined track and making a 2-minute beat. Next I’ll post a zip of my greatest beat submissions.

For now, here are my first fledging recordings:

I made a mixtape last night, and I also composed a hand-written letter. It’s been a long time, and brought back fond memories of my fanzine days, when several hand-written letters would arrive each day. With each envelope came a cascade of irrelevant flyers, stickers and glitter. No glitter or promotional stuff here though – this is a prison-bound tape. I included some interesting spoken word stuff (‘Weaponizing Mozart‘ about the government using classical music as a weapon), stand-up (Stewart Lee), Some of my own music (n01d34 & MegaShark) and even Nicky Campbell saying “cunt” live on Five Live.

I don’t know why I wrote this blog post but I am trying to post every day at the moment. It was cool to make a tape for a change.

Cadillac Records

18 August 2010

I’ve been listening to a lot of Howlin Wolf recently, especially since I saw the excellent Cadillac Records film, based on the Chess Records story. I’ve become increasingly interested in blues over the last couple of years, and this film really filled in some gaps for me. I think the main reason I love Howlin Wolf so much is I have a vivid memory of ‘Smokestack Lightning’ from an old Budweiser advert they always used to put between Beavis & Butt-head episodes on Channel Four.

Chess Records electrified Howlin Wolf’s catalogue in 1969, mixing it with Hendrix-style psychedelic rock. Howlin Wolf himself hated it, but I think it is rather good.

I would recommend Cadillac Records. I was slightly put off when I discovered Beyonce was in it, but my scepticism was ill-founded. Mos Def makes a great Chuck Berry, and Beyonce makes a really strong performance as Etta James. Read the rest of this entry »

Finding a Band Name

17 August 2010

Band names are hard to find. It’s tough to come up with a band name. My main demand is that it doesn’t begin with ‘The’ and isn’t long and weird. Long, weird names are cool but I don’t want one. I don’t think long band names get much better than …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead.

After a few sinister death-related names, I think we’re slowly settling on MegaShark.

I definitely wanted one of those 90s rock band names where you put two unrelated words together, like Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Idlewild, Kerbdog, Soundgarden et al. Read the rest of this entry »
